Albert Wenk was appointed Mammut’s Apparel Product Manager in 1983 and was closely involved in the development of Mammut soft shells from their earliest beginnings. He’s now Sales Manager of the Mammut Sports Group.


«In those days, mountaineers still wore heavy, scratchy, stiff woolen pants,» recalls Wenk. Climbers generally preferred cotton corduroy.


«That’s it! That’s exactly what I need,» exclaimed Australian world-class climber Kim Carrigan to former Mammut Product Manager and climber Albert Wenk. Mammut was the first mountain sportswear specialist to recognize the benefits of two-way stretch fabrics, revolutionizing forever the pants market with its free-climbing and mountaineering pants.

The ensuing years saw Mammut’s range expanded to include a wide selection of climbing, mountaineering and ski touring pants – much to the delight of the trade.


Mammut’s pioneering activities have driven the company to pole position in many markets – Mammut is often referred to as “the soft shell company” in the USA. Other members of the Mammut Sports Group have been focusing on the soft shell market as well: Also Raichle offers footwear that incorporates soft shell fabrics, and wax and fabric care specialist Toko has a range that includes soft shell washing and proofing products.
