bluesign

At Mammut, sustainability is a quality criterion with the same importance as best design, performance and functionality. Products shall be healthy not only for people, but also for nature

What is the issue?

Chemicals play a key role in the textile industry in general and specifically in the production of outdoor equipment. According to estimates, more than 25% of the chemicals substances produced worldwide are used in the textile and clothing industry. These substances are used to give outdoor products various functional properties including water repellence and dirt resistance, UV protection and odor neutrality.

What does Mammut do?

In February 2011, Mammut became bluesign® system partner. We have reached the first milestone with the conversion of our rope production according to the criteria of the to the bluesign® system per January 2012. Our goal is to systematically implement the bluesign® system in a step-by-step approach throughout all our textile products.

How does the bluesign® system work in practice?

The basic idea is simple: Only the use of safe and environmentally friendly materials leads to sustainable products, while at the same time the manufacturing processes shall have minimal impacts on humans and the environment. Mammut products shall not only stand for a high level of safety, quality and functionality, but also for sustainability.
The foundation is the bluesign® system substances list (bssl): It already includes over 900 chemical substances used in the textile industry, and hence is the most comprehensive "Restricted Substances List" (RSL).
The bluesign® system controls every stage of the textile value chain - from the chemical supplier to the material manufacturer, assembler and clothing brand. Before a company may become a bluesign® system partner, it has to undergo a strict screening and implement a corrective action plan.

How can customers recognize a bluesign® certified product?

How can customers recognize a bluesign® certified product?

bluesign technologies differentiates between two levels of product labelling: A product obtains the label „bluesign® approved fabric“ when at least 90% of the surface of the textile fabrics (inner and outer layers) where produced according to the bluesign® system. The label „bluesign® product“ puts the bar even higher and integrates all components of a product. This label is thus even more challenging to obtain, but guarantees highest safety and sustainability.
