Peru Project

Under the slogan “roped together in solidarity”, Mammut is celebrating not only its 150th anniversary, it also reinforces its partnership with the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA). The aim of Mammuts activity in Peru and Kyrgyzstan is to equip mountain and trekkings guides and and open up new horizons.

What is the issue?

The Peruvian mountain and trekking guides lack the means for good equipment. Although during the high season they are almost every day with guests in the mountains, they have no access to new material and work a.o. with ropes, which are already more than 10 years old.

What does Mammut do?

In 2010 Mammut becomes partner of the Cooperación Alpinista Suiza-Perù. We committed to use 1% of our turnover from the sale of our anniversary collection for the projects in Peru and Kyrgyzstan. Since 2007 we invested more than CHF 0.6 million and many hours of work for the project management behind the scenes.

Equipping the Peruvian mountain and trekking guides

The first donation included among others Goretex jackets and trousers for the more than 100 mountain and trekking guides. The handover took place in the “Casa de Guìas” in the heart of Huaraz. We decided not to hand out the equipment without some kind of service in return: each guide was given an individual monitoring booklet - the „Libreta Mammut“. The guide had to confirm receipt of the equipment on a checklist and undertake to use it responsibly.

The end result was an orderly material management and double checking system. Each year, the guides must have the equipment checked by the locally nominated „Comité Mammut“ and meet the agreed criteria.

Who is the Cooperaciòn Alpinista Suiza-Perù?

Our partner in this project is the initiative “Cooperación Alpinista Suiza-Perú”. It was initiated in 2007 by the former Zurich cantonal counsellor Dorothée Fierz and the former Peruvian ambassador in Switzerland, Elizabeth Astete.

The initiative resumes a traditional collaboration between Switzerland and Peru, established in the 1980s with the Peruvian association of mountain guides which was later incorporated into the first South American IFMGA association.
