Adjustment

The fit of a backpack, and therefore the wearing comfort, are deternined by:

1. Hip belt

  • Tightened: sits close to the body, high load transfer on the hips
  • Loosened: greater freedom of movement of the hips

2. Shoulder straps

  • Tightened: sits close to the body
  • Loosened: relieves pressure on the neck muscles

3. Chest strap

  • height adjustment to shift the load locus to the chest.
  • Tightened: shoulder straps sit close to the neck
  • Loosened: shoulder straps sit closer to the outside of the shoulders

4. Top load control strap

  • Tightened: the backpack sits close to the back for a feeling of direct contact
  • Loosened: relieves pressure on the shoulders, more ventilation for the back

5. Lower adjustment strap

  • Tightened: the backpack is pulled tightly to the hips for greater load transfer and better load control.
  • Loosened: greater freedom of movement of the hips

Positioning the backpack correctly

  1. Loosen the hip belt, shoulder straps and load control straps
  2. Place the backpack on your back, position the hip belt in the middle of the pelvis and pull tight
  3. Gradually pull the shoulder straps until the shoulders feel a slight load
  4. Finally, tighten the load control straps depending on the type of terrain you expect to encounter, the hard the terrain the tighter the straps.

Tip:
change the setting regularly to prevent signs of fatigue

Wearing positions

  • Short, padded hip flaps mean the hip belt must be worn on the waist
  • Low load transfer, the backpack is firmly positioned and at less risk of moving around
  • Long, padded hip flaps move the wearing position to the hips
  • High load transfer

Amending the back length of backpacks

  1. Use the Mammut Pack Sizing tool (alternative measurement) to measure the length of someone's back. Measurement area: between the top of the pelvic bone and the bottom, protruding cervical vertebra.
  2. Read the size on the Sizing Tool or convert it to a size using the table.
  3. Set the position of the shoulder strap to the specified size, by twisting it like a bayonet fastener.
