At Mammut, sustainability is a quality criterion with the same importance as best design, performance and functionality. Products shall be healthy not only for people, but also for nature
What is the issue?
Chemicals play a key role in the textile industry in general and specifically in the production of outdoor equipment. According to estimations, more than 25% of the chemicals substances produced worldwide are used in the textile and clothing industry. These substances are used to give outdoor products various functional properties including water repellence and dirt resistance, UV protection and odor neutrality.
What does Mammut do?
In February 2011, Mammut joined bluesign technologies. We have reached the first milestone with the conversion of our rope production to the bluesign® standard as per January 2012. Our goal is to systematically implement the bluesign® standard in a step-by-step approach throughout all our textile products.
How does the bluesign® monitoring system work in practice?
The basic idea is simple: If the value chain stays clean, then this is also true for the end product. Therefore, manufacturing processes and inputs are safe for humans and the environment. Mammut products shall not only be of a high level of safety, quality and functionality, but also of sustainability.
The foundation is the bluesign® Standard Substances List (BSSL): It already includes over 700 chemical substances used in the textile industry, and is the most comprehensive "Restricted Substances List" (RSL).
bluesign technologies controls every stage of the textile value chain - from the chemical supplier to the assembler and manufacturer. Before a company may become a bluesign® system partner, he has to undergo a strict screening as well as implement a corrective action plan.
How can customers recognize a certified product?
bluesign technologies differentiates between two levels of product labelling: A product obtains the label „bluesign® approved fabric“ when at least 90% of the surface of the textile fabrics (inner and outer layers) where produced according to the bluesign® Standard. The certificate „bluesign® product“ puts the bar even higher and integrates all components of a product. This label is even more challenging to obtain.
