Avalanche Airbags

Operation

Increased chance of survival

The functioning of the avalanche airbag is based on the physical principle of “inverse segregation”. This sorting effect means that in an equally moving mass of particles, the smaller particles gravitate to the bottom while the larger ones rise to the surface. The avalanche airbag increases the wearer’s volume, significantly boosting this effect. The avalanche airbag can therefore help to keep the wearer’s body on the surface of the snow and thus prevent complete burial.

Easy to be located

The size and bright color of the avalanche airbag assists with rapid location.

Protection Airbag System

Protection Airbag System

The Mammut® Protection Airbag System is the newly developed version of the well-known Snowpulse® Lifebag System. The special shape of the airbag and its clever integration in different backpacks are unique features. The shape of the airbag protects the wearer’s head, neck and chest area from mechanical injuries and in the event of an avalanche ensures an optimal position by keeping the wearer’s head and upper body on the surface. The Protection Airbag can therefore not only help to prevent complete burial, it also offers additional protection from mechanical injuries. In addition to the safety features, we have succeeded in designing a completely „removable“ airbag system. This allows the user to swap one system between several backpacks, allowing him or her to always select the most suitable backpack for the relevant application.

Functioning of the airbag system

Both airbag systems work according to the same principle. The individual components of the airbag are identical (deployment mechanism, Venturi valve, deployment handle, pressure cartridge). The only difference is the shape of the balloon and the attachment in the backpack. Pulling the deployment handle activates the deployment mechanism. The mechanism opens the pressure cartridge and the released gas flows through the Venturi valve into the airbag. The Venturi effect also draws ambient air into the airbag. The gas in the cartridge and the ambient air generate the 150 liters of the airbag. The entire process takes around three seconds depending on the temperature and height.

Simple and Safe

A safe system thanks to simple physical principles and intuitive operation.

Lightweight

During the development process for the airbag systems, special attention was paid to the lightness of the construction and space requirement. This has resulted in a significant reduction in weight and packing volume.

Maximum reliability

Mammut avalanche airbag backpacks are designed so that they can be used normally for years, without being deployed once. If there is an actual emergency, they can be deployed with maximum reliability: using a powerful force, the system inflates the buoyancy device within three seconds, even if there is resistance. A 100% proven, mechanical system with a cartridge that is ready to use for years to come provides the reliability that safety-conscious freeriders and ski tourers need.

Trauma Protection

According to the most recent findings, around a third of all avalanche victims die due to trauma injuries. With the "Protection Airbag System", the Mammut Protection series backpacks provide additional protection against trauma injuries. The special shape of the buoyancy device, which sits around the wearer's head, neck and chest, effectively protects these vital body parts in the event of a collision during an avalanche. This increases your chances of survival in two respects: you have the best possible protection against both being buried and trauma injuries.

Complete flexibility

When you buy a Mammut avalanche airbag backpack, you don't just get a product, you get an extremely flexible system. The many different backpacks within a model-series are designed to allow the airbag system to be easily removed or quickly transferred between different models. This means you can add versatility and value by using one airbag system with different packs. You also have a fully operational backpack to use from spring to fall, which saves you money.

No Limits

Until recently, ski tourers often cited weight as an argument for not carrying an airbag backpack. The Mammut airbag system, however, weighs just 1,200 grams including the carbon cartridge. This means that the 30-liter Mammut "Light Removable Airbag" backpack weighs just about 2,240 grams. It is therefore one of the lightest airbag backpacks on the entire market and is only slightly heavier than many normal ski-touring backpacks.

Simple Operation

The Mammut airbag system is designed so that operation is faultless and extremely user-friendly. Screw in the cartridge at home, quickly check the airbag system and fold out the deployment handle before you start – ready for powder! All Mammut airbag cartridges have also been approved for air transport by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Cartridges can also be hired from official Mammut Airbag Cartridge Rental Stations for a small fee. See special regulations for US/CA on www.mammut.ch/airbags-travel.

Ready for use in any conditions

Mammut airbags are based on a simple mechanical system. The pressure cartridge, the energy store of the system, is completely ready for use in any weather and at any temperature.

Cartridge Rental Stations

Taking an avalanche airbag with you on a flight always causes problems since the pressure cartridge required for its deployment is classed as a hazardous item. To make the situation easier, Mammut is setting up rental stations for pressure cartridges all over the world.

You can now set off for your mountain vacation without having to worry about transporting your avalanche airbag and pressure cartridge. Simply leave your own pressure cartridge at home, take your Mammut or Snowpulse avalanche backpack with you on the plane and rent the cartridge when you get there.

NOTE:
The cartridges rental station is currently only available at selected stores and will be constantly expanded to other locations.

Procedure for renting pressure cartridges

  1. Use our “Store Locator”      to search for locations at your destination. Select filter "Rental station for airbag cartridges" in SERVICES to show all locations that offer cartridge rental.
In the US and Canada, if there is no rental location near your destination it is possible to have a rental cartridge shipped to your destination. Contact Mammut North American customer service at info@mammutusa.com or 800-451-5127 for information.
  2. Inform the rental station of your arrival date to allow them to reserve a pressure cartridge for your trip. (for email contact details, see the store detail page)
  3. Collect the cartridge from the rental station
  4. At the end of your trip, return the cartridge to the rental station

Costs (RRP, may vary depending on the station)

  • 1-day rental: €8
  • 3-day rental: €15
  • 10-day rental: €30
  • Deposit: €100 / €185 (for 207 bar aluminum cartridge)
  • Additional charge for deployment: €20

Your deposit will be returned when you take the pressure cartridge back to the rental station.
If you deploy the cartridge, an additional cost of €20 (RRP) is charged.
This system applies only for Snowpulse and Mammut avalanche airbags equipped with the Inflation System 2.0.
All Mammut avalanche airbags use the Inflation System 2.0.
